Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
Abnormal uterine bleeding is recognised as prolonged periods, very heavy bleeding during menstruation or bleeding in between your monthly period. The average menstruation lasts between five and seven days with a cycle that is between 21 and 35 days. Any menstruation or cycle that is longer than average may be an indication of something being wrong.
Some symptoms of abnormal uterine bleeding include:
- Inconsistent menstrual cycles
- Abnormally long periods (longer than seven days)
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
- Bleeding at unusual times such as after sexual intercourse or between monthly periods.
Other causes of abnormal uterine bleeding include hormonal imbalance, fibroids, and menopause. In some cases, although it is rare, infections of the cervix, thyroid problems and uterine cancer can cause abnormal bleeding.
There are several tests that Dr Zulu will need to perform to diagnose abnormal uterine bleeding. These tests are:
- A pregnancy test
- Thyroid test
- Pelvic ultrasound
- Checking hormone levels
- A blood test to check for clots and see your blood count
- Biopsy of the endometrium
- Hysteroscopic exam
The treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding depends on the diagnosis, cause, and severity. It's also important to take into consideration the desire to conserve fertility. Possible treatments include:
- Medications such as birth control pills, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and tranexamic acid.
- Myomectomy
- Hysterectomy
- Endometrial ablation
- Endometrial resection
- Treatment for PMS and menstrual cramps
- Surgery, however, there's a possibility of the operation resulting in infertility.
